My husband and I first met David in 2007 while he and his crew were performing some major renovations on our next door neighbour’s house. We were so impressed that we retained the services of David Coulson and his team for renovations to be done to our house in 2007. The work was completed in a timely and efficient manner. We were very fortunate to retain David’s services once again in December of 2010 when we had some major renovations done to our kitchen and bathroom. The workmanship was first class and the renovations were completed in a timely fashion. We have nothing but praise and admiration for David and his crew and for the quality of work performed. We would not hesitate to contact David for any future work, nor would we hesitate to recommend David and his team to anyone considering building or renovating.
Karen and I wanted to let you know how much we enjoy the house since the renovation. The covered deck is great – particularly during this wet spring – and the kitchen is a joy! We have had many ‘wow’ comments!
You took a tired 75 year old house and gave it a new life. Thank you!
We appreciate the experience, design expertise and positive energy you brought to the project. When a commitment was made, it was always kept. Renovations are always stressful for the homeowner; the professionalism of you, your staff and sub-trades made our renovation as stress free as possible.
Karen and I have no hesitation in recommending David Coulson Design Ltd. Sincerely,
Shelley & I would like to thank your group for the recent renovation of our home on Bell McKinnon Road. We researched your company prior to making a decision as to who was best qualified for the design, execute the plan & stay within the allocated budget. We had previous experience with renovations & realize doing a project of this magnitude to expect the unexpected that would add cost. We were lucky on this reno, other than a few minor structural changes to the existing building there was nothing major that added significant cost. Your company reversed the normal approach to building. First we had a meeting and your group learned of our lifestyle. That meeting led to a visit to our home for your design team to view the existing layout of the house. The next step was to draft a plan that included photographs of the existing layout with digital images of the new layout. This was a great feature as I have difficulty with blue-prints. The photo concept was ideal for Shelley & myself as it gave us the opportunity to study the new layout and make any changes in case needed. Work commenced in February 2010 and we moved in May 24th. Your company took a home that was built in 1968 blended our lifestyle and created a contemporary style that will suit our needs well into the future. Shelley & I wish your company continued success.
My husband and I celebrate our good fortune at having found DCD for the renovation of our 1910 house and garden. David and his team never failed to impress us with their high standards, ease of communication and creative problem-solving.
This professional, top-notch crew worked so well together, they seemed to bring out the best in each other. Their relationship with sub-trades was even more impressive. We were astonished at the high caliber work. Every day since we moved in, we have delighted in the finished product. Our guests notice right away the amazing attention to detail and craftsmanship. Our house has been included in a number of green-energy tours, and we continually hear positive comments about the results.
Certainly, communication is a prized aspect to any professional partnership. David himself is an excellent listener and shares his own ideas with openness. He and his crew constantly impressed us with their ability to track details–large and small–over the duration of the work. Virtually nothing got missed. We were always informed of what had been done and why. We were able to stay on top of things by knowing what decisions were coming up. As well, we received lots of support in the decision-making process.
Our house renovation did not start out as a major job. However, at each step we discussed with David any obstacles and found ways to make the best choices for moving ahead. We saved time and money and frustration by having David in charge of this project. His creativity and sense of humour were priceless.
We recommend David and his team to anyone considering a renovation project–particularly if heritage features, healthy building materials and/or energy efficiency are part of the scope of the project. We believe David’s familiarity with the specifics of these areas and design in general will serve future clients well, too.
The David Coulson Design team was exactly what we needed to get our long pondered renovation off the ground. Right from the start David and his crew made us feel at ease and excited about the whole project. The Coulson design team came up with creative ideas that were substantially better than anything else we had come up with. It seemed like David knew exactly what we wanted even before we could see it’s possibilities. The designers listened to our needs and ideas and then suggested elements to the project that would increase the value of the space we were adding. The team developed a good rapport with us throughout the project and kept us informed verbally, by email or by phone about the next work to be done. The team also stayed in contact with us after completion of the project and this lead to two other small complementary jobs that gave us even more overall satisfaction and functionality of the new renovations. Technically, the quality of workmanship on the project was excellent. From the regular crew to the subtrades, there was a consistently high quality of workmanship. We also found them to be prompt, thoughtful, polite and tidy. They were committed to the project and work progressed continuously from the beginning to end.
Our relationship with David began in 2002 when he, through a recommendation, came and corrected some structural problems with the foundation of our home. Since then, he has renovated my parent’s kitchen and was then asked to upgrade their washrooms. Most recently we had him completely redo our kitchen / family area and part of our bathroom.
We have always chosen David because we trust what he says and are always happy with the results of his work. Our kitchen was done in the spring of 2009 and every day I still feel complete satisfaction with what was done.
I believe that David’s strengths are: communication, quality and trust. David and the people who work for him are friendly and kind. They take the time to explain what they are doing and they let you know what to expect. When surprises happen – and these always occur in a major renovation – I trust that David and his employees will make the situation right using direct communication and fair problem solving.I believe that David has the insight to treat his customers as he would like to be treated if the situation was reversed.
I appreciate all the work David has done for my family and look forward to future projects.
Recently, we had David Coulson and his team in to complete a renovation on our 30-year-old house to accommodate our growing family.
David impressed us from the beginning. The other designers we invited to our home came right through the front door, took a cursory look around our house, and told us that our only option was to create a second floor. When David arrived, he took a tour around the outside of the house for almost an hour, examining how and where the house sat on the property and how it related to the features of our property. Then, when he finally came in for a cup of tea and a chat, we spent a fantastic collaborative hour coming up with options. He was very sensitive to our budget constraints, and of the many options he presented to us, we chose one that he designed to be built in stages. Should we ever need to expand again, the infrastructure is in place. In the meantime, by thinking outside of the box, he converted our covered double carport off the kitchen into an incredible foyer and master suite.
During the construction phase, David’s team was lead by Don Verge. I can’t say enough about the professionalism and conduct of this team. Inevitably, when you are dealing with an older house, we ran into a few problems and discovered some fixes that had to be dealt with, but David, Don, and the team tackled them all. Nothing was done without 110% effort and attention to quality. As my father commented, “These guys are better than Mike Holmes!”
We should mention that at the time of the start of construction, we had a newborn in the house. Don and his crew were very sensitive to working around naps and quiet times, which we very much appreciated! They were also very nice to our 2-year-old, who wanted to spend all day watching “the guys”.
Finally, even though David and his team have multiple projects running at the same time, they always made us feel like their most important project. David, Jane, Don, and the rest of the team were immediately reachable by phone and they made themselves available to us whenever we needed a meeting, often within the same day.
On the whole, our experience with David Coulson and his team was nothing short of wonderful. They took a potentially stressful experience of major renovations (with a newborn and a toddler running around thrown in!), and made it relatively stress-free. Chris and I would not hesitate to recommend David and his team to anybody considering designing and building a new house, or renovating what they have.
“We realize the difficulty in securing quality trades people and meeting deadlines in this construction boom, yet all the workers on our job site provided quality work, were courteous, conscientious, and took pride in their workmanship.”
