Founded in 1989 by David Coulson, a passionate designer and builder with an eye for craftsmanship and sustainability, the company has grown from a small renovation outfit into one of the region’s most respected design–build firms.

A Vision Rooted in Craft and Community

From the beginning, David Coulson’s vision was clear: to create homes that not only looked beautiful but also lived beautifully— spaces that were healthy, energy-efficient, and timeless in design. His early work focused on heritage restorations and residential renovations throughout Duncan and the Cowichan Valley. These projects often involved breathing new life into character homes, combining modern functionality with classic West Coast aesthetics.

As the company’s reputation grew, so did the scope of its work. By the 2000s, David Coulson Design Ltd. was taking on full custom home builds and commercial projects, guided by the same principles of sustainability and craftsmanship that defined its early years. The expansion was natural, rooted in a simple belief: design and construction should not be separate worlds, but part of one seamless creative process.

With an in-house crew of journeyman carpenters, experienced project managers, and a talented design studio, the company delivers complete, tailored solutions for every client. The team works closely with trusted local tradespeople and suppliers, building long-term relationships that keep projects efficient, ethical, and community focused.

Long before “green building” became a buzzword, David Coulson and his team were already practicing it. The company’s philosophy emphasizes energy efficiency, natural materials, and healthy indoor environments. People Behind the Craft

Though the company bears his name, David Coulson’s success has always been built on collaboration. Today, the firm employs around 20 skilled staff members, including designers, technologists, and carpenters who share his dedication to detail and quality.

Notable leaders in our Design Department include Bill Robson, Senior Building Designer with over 50 years of experience and expertise in the building design and construction industry, graduating from McGill University of Montreal with a Bachelor of Architecture Diploma in 1973, Brigitte Allec, Director of Operations, Interior Designer and Project Manager with extensive knowledge in the construction industry and possessing a high aesthetic sense that helps her create living spaces that are both functional and charming, with over 25 years of experience, she graduated from the University of Manitoba with a Bachelor in Interior Design Diploma in 1997 and then expanded her field of expertise in 2005 with a Project Management diploma from Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, Cezar Cristea, Senior Building Technologist, with over 20 years of experience in the building design and construction industry, with Architectural Building Technology Diploma from Pacific Design Academy of Victoria in 2013, who bridges creative design with technical precision.

Leaders in our Construction Department include Christopher Boyd, Lead Finishing Carpenter with over 15 years of experience and a solid education in carpentry, also obtained his Passive House Tradesperson certificate in 2018. Last but not least, DCD team members with the most solid and experienced knowledge of construction on the ground, two of the most appreciated Carpenter Foremen, with over 35 years of actual work in the construction field Ken Verge and Roger Bertrand.

These are just a few of the DCD family who have contributed over the years to the success story of our company.  Together, the DCD team fosters a culture of mentorship, creativity, and integrity — where everyone takes pride in the work that bears the Coulson name.

Over the years, David Coulson Design Ltd. has left a visible mark across Vancouver Island. From heritage renovations in Duncan to contemporary West Coast homes in Shawnigan Lake and Nanaimo, the firm’s projects balance aesthetic beauty with practical livability.

One particularly memorable contribution is the 25-foot viewing tower built for the Somenos Marsh Wildlife Society’s Open-Air Classroom — a project that blended community service, environmental awareness, and architectural artistry.

Beyond their buildings, the company’s presence in the community is equally significant. As a member of the Duncan Cowichan Chamber of Commerce, David Coulson Design Ltd. has long supported local initiatives, trades, and charities that enrich the Cowichan Valley.
